You needn't be a Dow or a DuPont to be successful in the chemical industry. But it can't hurt to be a Vanderbilt. Founded in 1916 in New York City, R.T. Vanderbilt today is based in Connecticut, operates throughout the US, and sells its products worldwide. In addition to manufacturing rubber and numerous other chemicals for the adhesives, agriculture, ceramics, cosmetics, paper, and petroleum industries, R.T. Vanderbilt also mines kaolin clay (used in pigments, paints, and paper) and smectite ore through subsidiary Dixie Clay Company. The company also acts as a chemical distributor.
